A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT regarding our Mission Statement: I value hearing as the most precious of all the senses and consider preserving, protecting, and enhancing the sense of hearing to be my life's work. As Helen Keller stated, the loss of other senses separates people from things whereas hearing loss separates people from people. Identification of Hearing Loss: I take pride in the fact that Hearing Associates, P.C., has the finest state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment available to identify hearing loss, assess the degree of hearing impairment, and pinpoint its site along the auditory pathway. Our Doctors of Audiology are capable of evaluating the hearing of all populations from newborns to geriatrics, from those who are multiply handicapped to those in extended care facilities. Maximizing Residual Hearing: I am committed to providing high technology hearing aids not only because my patients consistently rate them as superior but also because independent research bodies have confirmed that state-of-the-art hearing instruments have provided higher levels of consumer satisfaction. Advancements such as the mini receiver in-the-ear hearing aids, digital hearing aids, multiple memories, and dual microphones constitute remarkable breakthroughs. I also want to make sure that every effort is expended to afford our patients better hearing in all situations. Personal and group FM systems are available for demonstration. Hearing Assistive Technology devices to improve communication ability via the telephone, for TV listening, and for sound alerting (smoke detectors, doorbells, and alarm clocks) are also on display in our waiting room. Preserving Hearing: I believe Doctors of Audiology are their patients' allies and encourage our professional staff to take every opportunity to educate and inform. Since the acuteness of hearing is susceptible to a wide variety of risk factors, patients are taught about recreational and occupational noise exposure, ototoxic medications, ototoxic ramifications of chemotherapy, and contributing systemic illnesses (such as diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease). Special services to prevent hearing loss include the provision of custom ear protection, musicians' earplugs and ear monitors, noise cancelling earphones, and swimmolds. Coping Strategies: The impact of hearing loss has ramifications on all aspects of one's life from family relationships to self-esteem, from academic performance to job stability. Research has even documented that hearing loss can effect health status. Thus, communication techniques and aural rehabilitation measures are shared and taught via private lessons or a group format. Our practice firmly believes that the hearing impaired patient needs to learn empowering strategies to live with hearing loss and minimize the impact of hearing impairment on quality of life.
